The Art Auction - Eleven - A Mixed Media Quilt

On Friday the 11/11/11 Room 11 started a quilt for the art auction. It is unique and one of a kind because it was made by all the students in Room 11. Everyone chose material they liked from Mrs Chao's scrap bags. If you look carefully, every student has added their initials to their block. The initials are made of paper from magazines. Mrs Chao took it home and quilted over the top.
We think it looks very colourful and bright. It can hang on the wall to be admired. Please bid on this unique quilt at our auction.

Room 11 is Printing with Ink

Our Year 3 and 4 team are learning how to print using rollers, water based printing ink and strips of newspaper. We inked up the tile, added strips of newspaper and placed the paper on the top and rolled firmly. Wow they looked great and it was a lot of fun.

Room 13's Hundertwasser Art

Last week Room 13 looked at the artist Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser. We noticed from his art work that he does not like straight lines and enjoys using bright, vibrant colours.

Check out the awesome paintings we made below. We zoomed in on a small part of a painting and then enlarged it. It's a lot harder than it sounds!

Observational Drawing In Room 10

We've started a rountine of doing a 10 minute observational drawing once a week. First we choose an interesting object to draw, like a piece of fruit or your hand, and look hard at lines and shade you see. Then we do a 10 second continuous line - blind drawing, a 30 second blind drawing and then a 2 minute line and shade drawing. The rule of thumb is to only make lines on your page when you are looking at the object. You can look down, but only to see where your pencil is.

New Art Display in the Library

To show case the great visual art that happens across all year levels at Muritai School, each Year level now has its own area in the LIBRARY to show exhibit their best pieces. It is also a good way to show the progression of skills from Year 1 to Year 8.

Room 11 paints Touching the Sky

Room 11 have finally finished our Touching the Sky paintings inspired by the art of New Zealand artist Robyn Kahukiwa. A staunch supporter of Maori rights and the power of Maori women, she has been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over 30 years and has works in major museum collections worldwide

As well as painting, drawing printmaking and sculpture, Kahukiwa writes and illustrates children's books.

Here are our versions of her painting Touching the Sky.

Arts Week focus- Phillip Clairmont

Every year the year 7&8's have an arts week where we explore a specific artists work and delve into the complexities of their lives. This year we are focusing on New Zealand Painter Phillip Clairmont. In particular we are exploring his lively painting " scarred couch", using the techniques he used to create an artwork of our own.

Clairmont remains one of NZ's most remarkable and energetic artists. His expressionist-style of painting turned ordinary household items and interiors into objects writhing and bursting with energy fragmented almost to abstraction. Clairmont has his own very distinctive style of painting where the pictures seem to move around the page in what he describes as an 'anthropomorphic' style.

The process of creating a masterpiece...

When creating an intricate artwork the children are encouraged to take their time and follow a series of processes and techniques.

Firstly The children had to create a background using acrylic and a fine brush.

The skills which the children were focusing on at this stage were paint application, brushwork, and colour selection. Once the backgrounds were completed the children studdies Phillip Clairmonts painting of an old couch. They used pencil and cartridge to recreate the couch in the painting, focusing on using organic anthropomorphic lines and colours. We used oil pastel to add detail and block in the couches,

We then added them to the background as one completed artwork.

Room 11 Self Portraits

We completed our pastel and dye portraits today. They are 3 D as we put a little spring at the back of the head to make the portrait pop from the backing.

Room 12's Fabulous Faces!

Today for art we started creating some 'fabulous faces'.
The skills we were learning was blending colours and looking at different tones.
Firstly, Mr Hull took an individual photo of all the children in the class. Secondly they were printed off in black and white - check one of them out...

We then studied the different shades on our faces - light right through to dark. We realised that some of the changes in tone were very gradual.
Using white, yellow, orange, brown and black crayons we started to shade in these tones. The light tones were shaded white, the next increase in tone yellow and so on and so forth...
This is what we got up to...

Doesn't it look great! We will publish more pics as they are finished - just the dying to do on them now!

Room 14's Fabric Art

Room 14 had a great time completing this art project. It was a fantastic way to end a very busy term. We spent the bulk of the week doing this.
To start off with we experimented with a variety of ways of decorating fabric. We then experimented with stenciling onto paper. We spent a long time thinking about how we could improve our work before we printed onto fabric. It is harder than it looks!
To finish off our works of art some of us hand stitched out edges and some of us sewed around the edges using Francie’s sewing machine. Thanks Francie!
It was whacky hair day so we look a bit strange.

Fabric Art by Room 15

Room 15 had a fantastic last week of Term 3 - we spent the majority of the time doing ART! For this actvity we focused on stenciling on fabric. We started by dying our fabric then we made stencils from paper. VERY CAREFULLY, we stenciled our designs onto our fabric using paint. To finish it off we CAREFULLY hand-sewed around our edges.

Ancient Egyptian Wall Designs

As part of our studies this term we have viewed a lot of wall designs and have made our own. The wall designs showed what life was like in Ancient Egypt. You can see the fashion of the day and things people liked to do. We think they look great!

Room1 Koru Patterns

We made these collage Koru patterns as part of our focus
on mixed media artwork.
We observed palm fronds carefully and tore up and
pasted magazine pages to recreate the patterns we saw.

August Landscapes

Room 10 are quickly becoming little artists.

Today they sketched the landscapes from the beaches of Eastbourne, taking a close interest in the lines they saw that the hills made. They then planned which areas would be lighter or darker and which hills they wanted to be bright and stand out. Once back in the classroom, the little chiddlers transferred their lovely line onto equally lovely card and used different painting techniques to create different colours and effects on their artworks.

Room 15 have been looking at the art of siapo from Samoa. We noticed how the designs have lines of symmetry and points of rotations.

WALT: to create a design that has at least 4 lines of symmetry and a point of rotation.

Room 8 Art

For the last two weeks Room 8 have been learning the Scraffitto technique.
First we planned a 'hill or village scene' or a simple pattern using squares and triangles. We used pastel to make our scene or pattern nice and bright. Carefully we painted over each part with black paint, as we painted over each part we used a toothpick to scratch a pattern in the paint so the bright pastel colours came through.
It was very tricky! We hope you like them!!

Abstract Art - Verbs and Adverbs

In writing, Room 10 have been learning about VERBS and ADVERBS and how they can make our writing more interesting.

So, we created an ABSTRACT ARTWORK by flicking, hurling, throwing, dribbling, dripping paint (VERBS - what we did). Some kids did this carefully, others did it ruthlessly, violently, artistically, slowly or quickly (ADVERBS - how we did it).

Throughout this term we are going to do lots of painting. We have begun by mixing primary and secondary colours and experimenting to see what we colours result. We listened to a story called ' Biscuit Bear' and added black and white to create new shades and tints.

Today we completed our paintings, based on the theme of quarter acre dreaming by Lex Benson Cooper. I have really enjoyed learning all of the painting techniques. We have all seen the benefit of taking our time and using quality materials. everyone is super proud of their artworks, they light up the classroom and make you take a breath.

We started of by doing some quick sketches of Mr Hull. It was funny because they were very quick. We also had to draw faces upside down, with our wrong hand and without looking.
We then looked at some art by Picasso and discussed some of his portraits.
From there we sketched out a distorted face that we were happy with.
One of the main objectives of the lesson was to learn how to hold a paintbrush and apply paint.

Art Workshop

The Junior classes attended an art workshop in the hall with a 'real artist!' Her name was Jane Lloyd and she taught us some sketching techniques based upon Graham Braddock's drawings and paintings.

We learned how to sketch still life objects so that they were realistic sizes and in proportion. We also learned how to shade and add shadows. It was great fun and we can use these new skills for more drawings in class and at home.

Michael Smither's - Poet's Bridge

Poet's Bridge by Michael Smither

For art this week Room 15 studied the print by NZ artist Michael Smither called Poet's Bridge. The print is a collage of small prints that all include an aspect of the bridge which is situated in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. The bridge has a long history and is actually named after a horse that won a race and earned a lot of money for the man who commissioned the bridge. For more information click here
We studied this print closely and noticed how Smither blended colours together to show shadow, light and reflection. We practiced blending colours from dark to light on strips of paper before we started our work. Each of us choose a portion of the print to paint each. Here's how they turned out.

Distorted faces

To start of the year and try to brighten up the room we have painted some distorted faces.
We started of by doing some quick sketches of our partners. It was funny because they were very quick. We also had to draw faces upside down, with our wrong hand and without looking.
We then looked at some art by Picasso and discussed the portrait of the 'Weeping Woman'
From there we sketched out a distorted face that we were happy with.

Calendar Art Inspired by Shaun Tan

It is calendar time again! This is a great fundraiser for the school. We have blogged them so you can see for yourself what the calendar will look like before you buy it.
For our calendars this year we chose to use some recycled materials. Many of the artworks you see here have a message.
For our artwork we used an illustration from The Red Tree by Shaun Tan as our inspiration.
We looked closely at the illustration. We spoke about the main shapes that we could see and the colours that were used. We also looked at how the layering effect was created and what messages were being given.
As a class we wrote a brief procedure on how to complete the work. We had to make sure we started from the background and worked our way up.
We dyed newspaper, cut out old pictures from dictionaries, magazines and junk mail.
This took us a long time but the art we have completed is amazing.

Portraits

On the 28th of May Lindsay Mitchell came into room 14 and did some pastel portraits!
She talked about how to get the right shape for the face and how to use green to create turns on the face. She showed us a finished pastel drawing of a girl then we started to draw her. Lindsay told us lots of different ways to make her look real. It was really fun.

Fabulous Faces

In Room 14 we have been implementing ICT into our ART. We have learned how to take photos using the digital camera. We know how to take long shots, close ups and mid shots.
At camp we took lots of photos!
Using some of the photos taken in class and on camp we are working towards doing a pencil drawing of one of them.
There has been a lot of discussion about tone! In class we did a fun exercise involving our photos, crayons and dye. When the photos were printed in black and white it was easier to see the different tones. We then applied different tones of crayon to the light and dark areas. Afterwards we applied dye.
